Silica Fumes For High Grade Concrete

Kavassu Rock 920D is a mineral composed of ultra fine amorphous spheres of silicon dioxide (SiO2), produced during the manufacture of silicon or ferro silicon. This tightly controlled electro-metal- lurgical process involves the reduction of high purity quartz in electric arc furnaces at tempera- tures of over 2000oC The Silica fumes is formed when SiO gas, given off as the quartz reduces, mixes with oxygen in the upper parts of the furnace. Here the SiO is oxidized to SiO2 conden- sing into the pure spherical particles of Silica fumes forming the major part of the smoke or fume from the furnace. Hence the alternative name for Kavassu Rock 920D is condensed silica fume or micro silica. It is in general known as micro silica. The oxidized silica is recovered in bag-house filters before being taken to further processing. The average particle is 0.15 micron in diameter, meaning that each micro sphere is 80 – 100 times finer than a cement grain. In a Concrete mix, with a 4 – 15% dosage of Kavassu Rock 920D of cement, there will be between 50000 and 100000 Silica fumes particles per grain of cement. Silica fume has historically been available in three basic product forms: undensified, slurried, and densified. Slurried silica fume is no longer available in the Indian market. Shalirock 920U is primarily used in prebagged products such as grouts & repair mortars.

Particle Size : Most particles are sub-micron. Average particle diameter is approx. 0.15 microns, about 1/100 of the size of cement grains.
Particle Shape : Smooth, glassy spherical particles.
Specific Surface Area: Ranging from 15000 to 30000 m2/kg (as measured by the nitrogen- absorption method – BET).
Density (Specific Gravity): Approximately 2.2 (cement is typically 3.1).
Bulk Density : 500-700 kg/m3. Slurry will have a bulk density of about 1400 kg/m3.
Colour : Ranging from light to dark grey.

KAVASSU ROCK 920 D

Densified silica fume works very well in concrete. However, one caution when working with this product form is to ensure that the mixing is adequate to break up the particle agglo- merations. Mixing in some types of mixers such as those that are used in dry mix shotcrete, or other applications where coarse aggregate is not present may not be adequate to break up the agglomerations. In those situations, an undensified silica fume may be more appropriate. Contact the Silica Fume Association for assistance in these types of applications. Densified silica fume is available as shown in Table 3. In bulk, the densified silica fume may be stored & dispensed like any other cementitious material in a concrete plant.

Silica fume has historically been available in three basic product forms: undensified, slurried, and densified. Slurried silica fume is no longer available in the Indian market. Undensified silica fume is available, but it is not frequently used in ready-mixed or precast concrete. Undensified silica fume is primarily used in pre-bagged products such as grouts or repair mortars.
